Smithereen farm, our gardens, orchards, cranberry bog, blueberry barren, grocery store, processing kitchen and greenhouses are all located in Downeasternmost Washington County Maine, a wild and powerful place.

This farmstead we now inhabit was established around 1820. It looks out over Cobscook Bay, named for the Passamaquoddy word Kapskuk, which refers to the boiling waters of Reversing Falls, at the tip of our our Leighton point peninsula.
Cobscook Bay is an extremely productive marine ecosystem. In 1850, there were 27 canneries and near-daily steamships straight to Boston, these booming times have fallen away, but what remains is clean, cold water and forest running down to the shore.
We chose to live and work here because of the abundant wild-growing marine algae (seaweeds), the feral meadows, charming historic fishing towns, the huge tides and drama of this glacially scraped landscape. It’s a tough bunch that live here, wild blueberries, wild animals and also the humans—but it makes for good eating.
The algae, the alewives, the mackerel, the wild herbs and feral apples. Our gardens are fertilized with beachcast rockweed and organic cow manure from nearby Tide Mill Farm. The farm is protected by a conservation easement from Maine Coast Heritage Trust and adjoins conserved lands in many directions, including Moosehorn wildlife refuge, Cobscook State park, Cobscook Shores, Downeast Salmon Federation, Downeast Coastal Conservancy and others.
We feel lucky to live in one of the wildest corners of New England.

2025 FARM UPDATE

Smithereen Farm enters our eighth season here in Washington County. With our arms full of babies we have a focus this year on #EatDowneast outreach and field trips for local kids.

Early spring is all about algae harvest, drying, and processing. Then come the wild and farmed herbs in their sequence.

The Smithereen Farmstore opens on May Day with homegrown veggies, a widening local food selection, and new local food map. We accept WIC (SNAP coming soon!) and participate in the Maine Senior FarmShare program. Our shared-use kitchen is available to tour, a particularly useful resource for other startup businesses who need to access to a certified commercial kitchen for creating value-added products.

On Saturday, May 24th we welcome you to our annual community event: the Fourth Annual Pennamaquan Alewife Festival. Join us in downtown Pembroke for free lunch, smoked fish, biologists talks, painting, bike tune-ups, and live music! Walk down to the river to welcome the tremendous abundance of silver fish in our healthy river, surrounded by the blossoming shadberry bushes. It’s an annual parade of life not to be missed!

In July, we welcome the public for U-pick blueberries, and in September, for U-pick cranberries, in our certified organic and “Bee Better” locations. Would you like to work with us during blueberry season? We need more harvesters, sorters, and packers. Reach out to [email protected]

Highlights from the Third Annual Pennamaquan Alewife Festival

Our signature springtime event took place this year on May 24 and May 25, 2024. We welcomed community members from near and far! Thank you to Downeast Salmon Federation, NOAA, and Maine Tourism for helping to make this event a success! See you all again next year.

Wholesale our delicious products!

Bring the tastes of Downeast Maine into your markets and shops. We transform blueberries, seaweed, and wild herbs into jams, jellies, broths, baths, and teas.

The Minke: Our Cooperative Commercial Kitchen

With the help of a grant from USDA, we opened a cooperative commercial kitchen space called The Minke. Alongside other local farmers and producers, we preserve and process our fresh high-season produce into value-added products capturing the essence of coastal Maine. Are you a Washington-County food producer in need of a certified space to create your value-added products?

EAT DOWNEAST: Washington County

is the name of our program promoting the vibrant local food networks of Washington County. We’re proud to have received a Local Food Promotion Program grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). We’re cultivating networks of resilience and growth, distributing local products to a national audience, and encouraging young farmers to move here!
