Residency
Smithereen Farm offers winter residencies to farmers: affordable shared housing in the fallow months. Over-winter in an agrarian community here in Pembroke.
Smithereen Farm offers affordable, shared, winter housing to farmers and agriarian-adjacent people.
Amenities:
In the summer many of our spaces are occupied by farmers, artists, visiting teachers, guests, students etc.
During the off-season, our studio spaces and rooms in shared houses become more available and are generally rented for $350/month. This includes access to common rooms, plenty of space for studio/desks, utilities, fast wifi at Reversing Hall, a carpenter shop, sewing machines, video projection space, and access to our wonderful agricultural library. We have housed many young farmers and those moving into Washington county.
As of Fall 2023: Elver, Fox, Cat and Grey lodge are all furnished, with cooking facilities, fridge/freezer, laundry, parking, and ample storage. Each year we are able to fix up more buildings and create more habitat for good projects and humans.
If you are interested in this opportunity please reach out to [email protected] with a letter of reference and letter of interest.
The purpose of these winter residencies is to make it easier for young farmers and natural resource entrepreneurs to re-locate to Washington County.
Who We Seek:
We are keen to recruit people who love living simply in a super rural coastal community. This is a place where having a car is pretty important as is being sensible in navigating winter hazards. It is also a place with hiking trails in every direction, beautiful water and beach access, glorious scenery and historic towns.
Eastport, Calais and Lubec are each about a half hour away with full grocery stores. Pembroke has only a Dollar General, Freshies and the Smithereen Farm Store. Please read the “Smithereen Farm Welcome Pack” for a full listing of local businesses.
Living here isn’t the same as living in a city, so you should be prepared for that. It means being kind and considerate of rural neighbors, and taking precautions not to fall into trouble, as there are very few emergency services here to save you.
We welcome groups of people hoping to share a house, individuals, and couples. Before you come, we will set up an interview, sign a formal lease agreement and take a security deposit in case of damage. Pets are allowed on a case by case basis and you must disclose and communicate clearly about any pets you wish to bring.
